Fillers for Beginners
Dermal fillers, also known as facial fillers or just fillers, and aesthetic injections are cosmetic treatments used to improve your appearance and help you look younger. While the processes are somewhat similar, fillers and other aesthetic injections differ.
Keep reading if you are considering fillers or other injections to enhance your appearance and bring back some of your youthful looks.
Types of Fillers
As we age, our skin naturally loses elasticity and fullness. This causes flatness and sagging, making wrinkles and lines more prominent. Fillers and injections can help reverse the signs of aging, leaving you looking and feeling hydrated, refreshed, and more youthful.
Fillers and injections help smooth your skin, replace lost volume, eliminate the appearance of wrinkles, and much more. People commonly use both to provide a youthful appearance or enhance particular features.
Botox and “baby Botox”, which use a lower volume of Botox than traditional injections, are designed to temporarily relax muscles, preventing them from contracting and reducing the appearance of dynamic wrinkles. This treatment also helps with collagen production, an essential component in reducing static wrinkles and keeping firm skin.
Fillers add volume, fullness, hydration, and even shape. There are a variety of facial fillers, and each has its distinct benefits. Some options include:
- Juvederm
- Restylane
- Sculptra
- Radiesse

Where do you Inject Fillers?
In several areas of the face, fillers and even baby Botox can improve your appearance and help you look and feel your best. Some of the areas and their associated improvements include:
- Plumping of your lips
- Filling in forehead lines
- Adding volume to your cheeks
- Reshaping your chin or jawline
- Eliminating lines below each corner of your mouth
- Improving the profile view of your nose
- Reducing the appearance of scars
How Long Does it Last?
Fillers and injections generally last a few months to a year. The longevity will depend on the individual, their lifestyle, and the treatment type. Over time, fillers, Botox, and baby Botox are metabolized by the body, which means the effects will start to fade. Getting a touch-up before this happens can improve the duration and help you maintain the results longer.
What is the Procedure Like?
When you come into Toronto Medical Aesthetics for facial fillers, our team will sit down with you, discuss your issues, and help you choose the right treatment. The procedure usually takes 15-20 minutes, depending on your needs.
Some people prefer a topical or injected numbing to the treated areas, while others are okay without this. Baby Botox or Botox typically doesn’t need the numbing but fillers go a bit deeper, and you may have a better experience with the numbing.
After your session, you can return to most of your usual activities. There is no significant downtime for fillers or injections.
What are the Risks?
Facial fillers are safe for many and provide excellent results. A medical history will be taken prior to treatment to ensure your health and safety.
Some common temporary effects of the treatment include :
- Swelling
- Redness
- Pain
- Bruising
- Itching
These effects usually occur in or around the injection area. These reactions generally clear up within hours and rarely up to a week or two.
